What is the Spotswood Drug and Alcohol Alliance?

Made up of volunteers, the alliance plans, coordinates and conducts alcoholism, tobacco, and other drug abuse prevention activities. The alliance program has propelled New Jersey to an impressive national position, earning national awards from Parents Resource Institute for Drug Education Inc. (PRIDE) and Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) for an outstanding state network of community alcohol, tobacco, and other drug prevention programs.

Why Should I get Involved?

The use of illicit drugs and the inappropriate use of the legal substances among young people remains unacceptable high. In New Jersey early first use of alcohol is usually between 11 and 12 years of age. Substance abuse cuts across all socio economics, racial and ethnic boundaries affecting all aspects of society. Approximately 504,000 New Jerseyans are alcohol dependent and at least 163,000 additional individuals also are drug dependent.

Who Funds the Alliance?

Funding for the alliance to prevent alcoholism and drug abuse is provided by Drug Enforcement Demand Reduction (DEDR) fines. The fines are collected at the municipal level from individuals convicted of drug-related offenses and are used to help substance abuse prevention programs.
